Cale groove on "Wanted Man" before the song takes on a drama of its own, and caps the session with a now cool, now torrid reprise of the jazz standard, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." He picks up an acoustic guitar on Jimmy Reed's leisurely musing "The Sun Is Shining," carves out a J.J. The album also allows Ellis to stretch out and reveal his diverse interests and influences. ![]() Better yet is the heartsick blues "A Quitter Never Wins." Featuring a strong, brooding vocal by Ellis, it demonstrates how fully he and Leavell complement each other, first subtly, then with fire. The opening cut, "To the Devil for a Dime," quickly resorts to an old cliche, as Ellis considers selling his soul to the devil, but the context is contemporary and the tale convincing. The lyrics are also more consistent than on previous Ellis albums. MUSICIANS ARE forever calling their latest recording their best, as if growth is inevitable, but it's easy to see why blues guitarist Tinsley Ellis recently chose to put "Storm Warning" at the top of his list.įor starters, Ellis is working with organist Chuck Leavell on five songs that have the texture and soul to make some of his earlier arrangements seem lightweight by comparison.
